New post created to protect religious freedom

At its session on Wednesday, the Government appointed MP Anna Zaborska (OLaNO) to the post of government proxy for the protection of freedom of religion or belief, TASR learnt on the same day.

The post is to be created on the basis of the Government Manifesto which says that "the Government is aware of the growing seriousness of the problem of violations of freedom of thought, conscience and religion in the world. It will therefore actively support the participation in activities of the international community through the International Religious Freedom Alliance". Zaborska will hold the office as of Wednesday. The proxy will carry out the post without being entitled to financial compensation.

"It is our duty to help people persecuted for their faith or beliefs, regardless of who they are or where the injustice is happening. The question is how," Zaborska said in a statement. "We can't be quiet when freedom of religion is trampled, no matter where it is in the world. Democracy and solidarity are key to solving this fundamental problem. Those who persecute people for their faith and religious beliefs are enemies of freedom. It doesn't matter whether Christians, Jews, Muslims, Mormons or atheists are persecuted," she added.
