Slovakia is about to face another wave of food price hikes, with increases in pastry prices likely to be followed by prices of milk and other commodities, Emil Macho stated after being re-elected as the President of Slovak Agricultural and Food Chamber (SPPK) at the chamber's general meeting on Tuesday. Macho warned about the growing gap between costs and revenues. "Costs for Slovak farmers and food producers continue to rise. Taxes, land rental-related costs, energy and all the other items are going up along with COVID-19 costs. At the same time, food prices have stagnated and we currently have no choice but to increase them," he said.
According to Macho, it's necessary for the Slovak food producers to acquire support also from the state. "The promised support of the Slovak Government in the restoration of domestic production and processing segments continues not to happen. We must say that Slovak farmers and food producers haven't received a single euro during the pandemic or only minimal help. Hence, there can be no talk about any competitiveness on the joint European market," he claimed.
