Convicted tax fraudster admits illegal tax refund

Convicted tax fraudster Ladislav Bašternák confessed on Tuesday before Bratislava V District Court that he illegally claimed a tax refund worth approximately €2 million in 2012.The case concerns Ladislav Bašternák's purchase of real estate in the Five Star Residence housing complex in Bratislava. While the defendant originally claimed that he'd bought the apartments for €12 million, the actual price he paid was lower than that.

Bašternák was already sentenced to five years in minimum security prison in 2019 over tax and insurance evasion. The entrepreneur's assets have been seized by the state, because he caused extensive economic damage. Further charges of tax and insurance evasion were pressed against him shortly after he was convicted. The court imposed a seven year ban on him working in a statutory, supervisory body or as a procurator in a business company. However, the court waived the summary sentence as well as the penalty of confiscation of property.
