On Monday, the main trial of former Prosecutor-General (PG) Dobroslav Trnka began. He faces charges of misusing a public official's powers, related to an audio recording made by the Slovak secret service during an intelligence operation nicknamed Gorilla. The recording included wiretapped conversations between politicians, state representatives and businessmen on kickbacks related to privatisation and alleged corruption. According to the investigator, Trnka acquired the audio from crooked entrepreneur Marian Kočner. Trnka decided not to submit it to law enforcement and instead kept it with the aim of seeking material profit for himself and Kočner.
Trnka denied his guilt. Before noon on Monday, the trial was adjourned with the proceedings set to resume on Tuesday when another former PG, Jaromír Čižnár has been summoned to appear as a witness. After that the trial is scheduled to continue on September 13 and 14.
