Slovak average salary lowest in EU

Following a conversion through purchasing power parity, Slovak employees can buy fewer goods and services for the average salary, than, for example, Turks, Bulgarians and Romanians, according to the current analysis by the Socio-Economic Analysts Association.

The latest Eurostat data converted in this manner show that Slovakia is in the last place among the compared countries. "Despite the fact that the above statement seems to be a hoax, it is essentially true, because the comparison of nominal values of average salaries is irrelevant, as price levels are not comparable in the countries being compared," said socio-economic analyst Ján Košč.

Thus, Slovaks are worst off in the EU in this aspect. "Our ranking points to the fact that the average Slovak employee buys the least goods and services among the countries compared to their salary. Less than a third of what the average Germans can buy, less than half of what the average Irish, Spaniards and Italians can buy. But the average Slovenians, Hungarians, Poles, Czechs, but also Romanians will also buy more than a third more. Even the average Bulgarians and Latvians can also buy a little more," added Košč.
