Statements by Prime Minister Robert Fico, in which he verbally attacked Ukraine, are scandalous, Opposition SDKU-DS MP Ivan Stefanec said in a statement on Thursday. Speaking amidst a debate on gas supplies from Russia to Europe, Fico said after a European Council session in Brussels on Tuesday that Ukraine "deceived Slovakia big time" during the gas crisis in 2009.
"They (Ukraine) didn't help us and speculated until the last moment. We know they (Ukraine) stole gas that was transported across its territory to Slovakia and to Western Europe," said the premier. According to Stefanec, who was elected as an MEP for the first time on Saturday, Fico isn't acting like the prime minister of a sovereign country. Instead, Fico is acting like a coward and a gullible politician who has fallen prey to Russian propaganda, said Stefanec. "Or worse, as an agent for Russia's, rather than Slovakia's interests," he added. Stefanec also said that not once has he clearly heard from Fico words of condemnation of Russia's aggression towards Ukraine or attacks from pro-Russian separatists.
