Slovak film premiered at Venice Festival

The debut feature film by internationally successful documentarist Peter Kerekes 107 Mothers was premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on Thursday. It was included in the Orizzonti competition section screening films representing the latest aesthetic and expressive trends in foreign cinematography. The story of a woman who committed a crime of passion and came to prison pregnant was inspired by the true life of one of the convicts in a Ukrainian prison. "I ... wanted the film to deliver an authentic collective testimony of the convicted mothers - the loneliness they feel when their children are taken away and they despairingly finish their birthday cake; the flashes of happiness when the women briefly forget they're in prison," states the Slovak director. The film is a Slovak, Czech and Ukrainian co-production. After the Venice International Film Festival, it will be screened at the festival in San Sebastian (September 17-25). It is also possible to see it in Slovakia at the opening of the Cinematik festival in Piestany, western Slovakia, on September 14. It will enter Slovak cinemas on October 14.
