77 years since Slovaks stood up against Nazi occupation

On Sunday, Slovakia commemorated the 77th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising with numerous events held around the country. The Uprising started on August 29 1944 in Banská Bystrica during World War II. The aim of the movement was to resist German troops that had occupied the Slovak territory and to overthrow the collaborationist government of Jozef Tiso. The uprising was largely defeated, however, its representatives continued in small guerrilla operations until the Red Army, Czechoslovak Army and Romanian Army liberated Fascist Slovakia in 1945.
