Animal welfare group praises bill giving police new powers

The animal welfare organisation 'Sloboda zvierat' (Animal Freedom) has praised a recently drafted amendment to the Police Corps Act that would allow police officers to enter private houses and flats if they suspect that an abused animal could be inside. The organisation pointed to the fact that official veterinary surgeons already have similar powers as they're permitted to enter various private premises - including establishments, houses and transport vehicles - if they suspect that the life and health of an animal could be in jeopardy.

"However, in our experience with the Regional Veterinary and Food Administration (RVPS), many vets are afraid to make use of this power. They often don't enter such premises, and suffering animals are left unaided. That's why we are pleased to see that the Police Corps Act will be amended and we hope that the police will actually use the new power in practice," stated Sloboda zvierat representative Silvia Canova.
