Former special prosecutor Dusan Kováčik will remain in custody, as the Specialised Criminal Court judge turned down his appeal last week. The decision is not definitive and has been appealed against by the defendant to the Supreme Court, which will have the final say in the matter.
In his complaint, Dusan Kováčik pointed to new circumstances, such as the false testimony by witness Csaba Domotor. He voiced suspicion that other witness testimonies in his case might have been manipulated as well. "The court has not been apprised of findings that have emerged from their prosecution by the Internal Affairs Inspectorate and the defendant is not presenting them," claimed the judge, adding that internet articles do not have the weight of evidence and the court cannot take them into consideration.
Kováčik faces charges of founding, orchestrating and supporting a criminal group, bribery, misuse of a public official's powers and endangering confidentiality. He has been held in police custody since late October 2020.
