ID cards could soon compulsorily include fingerprints, according to the preliminary information on the amendment to the Act on ID Cards prepared by the Interior Ministry published on the Slov-lex website. "The draft amendment to the law will oblige citizens to undergo fingerprinting and this will also have an impact on the existing possibility to apply for an identity card through the portal of the Ministry of the Interior," read a statement of the Interior Ministry adding that citizens must come to apply for an ID in person only. The forthcoming legislation responds to the 2019 Regulation of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. "This regulation imposes an obligation on EU member states to include the content of the dual-interface chip in the identity card," said the Ministry.
