Foreign Minister calls on top Hungarian representatives to respect Slovakia

Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korčok (an SaS nominee) stated on Wednesday that the manner in which top Hungarian representatives are addressing certain historical events concerning Slovakia and Hungary contradicts Budapest's proclaimed desire for good relations between the two countries. He was reacting to Hungarian Parliamentary Chair László Kövér's recent visit to the Slovak town of Šamorín, with a strong ethnic Hungarian population, during which he unveiled a memorial to displaced Hungarians and delivered a speech. "I must voice a strong disapproval of the fact that Hungary's second most senior representative feels the need to come directly to Slovakia and present his own view of history," stated Korčok. The Slovak Foreign Minister added the post-war border settlement is definitely resolved once and for all, and Slovakia wants relations with Hungary to be oriented towards the present and future. On Thursday, the Foreign Ministry sent a diplomatic note to Hungary with the request that the Hungarian side act in accordance with the usual and standard diplomatic procedures and inform in advance about the purpose of the visit of its state officials. Parliamentary Chair Boris Kollár (We Are Family) stated that he stands by the Foreign Affairs Minister's statement.
