The Slovak Government will propose Maroš Šefčovič to the new European Commission for a post corresponding to his past achievements, said Prime Minister Robert Fico on Monday. Šefčovič is currently Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Inter-institutional relations and administration and was Slovakia’s ambassador to the EU between 2004 and 2009.
He led the candidate list of Fico’s Smer party in Saturday’s elections for the European Parliament and gained highest number of preferential votes (66,966). The Prime Minister said that the fact that Slovakia recorded the lowest turnout in EP elections across the European Union (EU) for the third time in a row, requires an open dialogue between interested political parties and institutions of the European Union.
