Slovakia commemorates Roma Holocaust Memorial Day

"Unfortunately, we are once again witnessing how easy it is to exploit prejudice to incite hatred, which, as we know from the past, can grow monstrously," said Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová on the occasion of International Roma Holocaust Memorial Day. She is one of the numerous Slovak politicians who commemorated the day. Without historical memory, the capacity for self-reflection is lost, and the Roma Holocaust must not be forgotten, stated Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korčok.

On the night of August 2 to 3, 1944 2,897 Roma, mostly women, children and elderly people, were killed in the Gypsy family camp at the Auschwitz concentration camp in southern Poland. Therefore, August 2 is marked as the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day to commemorate the victims of the Romani genocide.
