With the lowest turnout in the European Union history, on Saturday Slovakia has elected thirteen new Members to the European Parliament (MEP), representing a total of eight political parties. The 2014 European Parliament elections in Slovakia reached a European all-time low of 13.05 percent, with the EU average standing at around 43 percent.
According to official election results released by the Central Election Committee after 11 p.m. on Sunday, Smer-SD won on 24.09 percent, which translates into four MEP seats - a drop by one from current five MEPs. Both the Christian democrats and the SDKU-DS party got two mandates, while other five political subjects get to have one representative in the European parliament. The Slovak Parliament is to see some personnel changes, as a number of lawmakers won seats in the European Parliament and are thus obligated to relinquish their mandates in the national legislative body.
