A total of 628 people committed suicide last year in Slovakia, up by about 10 percent in comparison to the previous period. According to the National Centre of Medical Information (NCZI), the highest number of suicides in Slovakia was in 2008, when 631 people decided to end their lives.
"Overall, the cases of deliberate self-harm - including suicide attempts – climbed to 1,600 last year which is a slight year on year increase. The number of cases for men and women is almost equal when it comes to attempts. They are most common in younger age groups of 30 to 39 while suicides are usually committed by people aged 50-59 years”, said NCZI spokesman Peter Bubla. The suicide attempts of men were most commonly carried out with sharp objects. Women often choose drug overdoses. In terms of location, the highest suicide rate was recorded in the Banská Bystrica region (110) and the lowest rate was in the Trnava region (61).
