The U.S. State Department announced the decision to build a new U.S. embassy in Bratislava because the current one does not meet safety parameters established by the U.S. Congress for U.S. diplomatic missions around the world.
Building a new embassy in Bratislava should take five to six years. The first step - finding and buying a suitable site - usually takes two years or more. After the land is bought and the embassy building is designed, construction can start, which usually takes another three to five years. In the coming months the U.S. Department of State will send a planning team to Bratislava that will meet with representatives of local institutions and real estate experts.
