More than half of Slovaks would take part in the referendum on early elections, indicated a survey by the Focus agency. The poll asked people to declare how sure they are (in percentage points) that they would take part in such a referendum. 52.9% of respondents declared that they are at least 60% determined to participate. However, the head of Focus and sociologist Martin Slosiarik assumes that despite the high proportion of respondents who declared their participation in the referendum, in reality only about a third of eligible voters would participate.
In May, Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová received the petition with over half a million signatures requesting a referendum on early elections. President asked the Slovak Constitutional Court to decide whether such a referendum is in accordance with the Slovak constitution.
In Slovakia, 50% of eligible voters need to take part in order for a referendum to be valid. This happened only once out of eight times in the country's history, when Slovaks agreed to join the EU.
