The Government on Wednesday approved a motion according to which Slovakia will donate a portion of its COVID-19 vaccines to other countries in line with a proposal from the Health Ministry.
Under the COVAX initiative, the leaders of EU-member countries have vowed to gift at least 100 million COVID-19 vaccines to third countries by the end of 2021. "Current projections indicate that the EU should have a surplus of vaccines in the second half of 2021 for all member states. It's therefore necessary for Slovakia, as a member of the EU, to meet its obligations towards the international community," read the approved materials.
The specific amount of the vaccines that will be donated will be based on the number of jabs that have or will have been delivered to Slovakia and its vaccination rate. As for Slovakia's neighbours, Hungary has promised to donate 400,000 jabs, while Poland is set to gift four million and Austria one million.
