The trade union at U.S. Steel Košice, one of the largest employers in Slovakia, has announced a strike alert. As the main reason, they cited the failure to reach an agreement regarding a salary-related supplement to the valid collective agreement following five rounds of collective bargaining.
"From our point of view, the issue of weekly working time, or the enormous pressure from the employer to have it increased, has become a key moot point," stated the head of the OZ KOVO trade union at U.S Steel Košice Juraj Varga. The weekly working time at the plant currently stands at 35.5 hours, which the union wants to preserve. Increases in salaries for this year and other benefits are among further apples of discord between the two sides.
