Ukraine itself is to blame for the majority of its problems, Prime Minister Robert Fico said at a seminar with German investors in Bratislava on Tuesday. According to the premier, the current situation in the country is an upshot of Ukraine's inability to govern itself and to organise its own internal affairs.
He added that in all future decisions regarding Ukraine, he's aiming to pursue a rational approach that will involve a particular focus on Slovakia's national interests. Such interests include sound economic growth, which could be jeopardised by the conflict between Ukraine and Russia and by the EU's potential slapping of the most stringent economic sanctions on Russia. “It would be wrong to sacrifice such important things in favour a political struggle that doesn't directly concern Slovakia”, said Fico. Should stricter sanctions indeed be imposed on Russia, damage to Slovakia's growth could amount to some 2 percent of GDP yearly, he added.
