The eastern Slovak city of Košice has been included in a list of the top ten “European Gems That Tourists Haven't Discovered” by travel guide smartertravel.com. The website description listed Slovakia’s second largest city due to it being nominated as a European Capital of Culture in 2013 and because of its strong position towards the arts.
The site writes that, “There's plenty of history here, including heritage-protected buildings like the fortified castle of Spiš, one of the biggest in Central Europe. And Kosice's natural beauty is remarkable, especially at the Slovak Paradise National Park, home to the Dobšinská Ice Cave”. The other top European locations were Carcassonne (France), Trier (Germany), Naxos (Greece), Porto Palermo (Albania), Kotor (Montenegro), Appenzell (Switzerland), Bolgheri (Italy), and Korcula (Croatia).
