The Judicial Council will decide today about the Supreme Court chair for the next five years. This election is one of the most publicly followed events in Slovakia at the moment, as Štefan Harabin, the incumbent Supreme Court Chairman, hopes to get reelected.
Harabin is a controversial figure on the Slovak Judicial scene, when prior to the elections more than 11 thousand people signed a petition addressed to the Judicial Council against his re-election. While five years ago the Council unanimously voted for Harabin, his position is not that straightforward anymore. According to the SME daily, the Judicial Council members have admitted, that the election might end up in deadlock. In this scenario, the new elections will have to take place in 120 days and neither of the present candidates will be allowed to take part in them. The opponents of Štefan Harabin in today’s election are a Supreme Court judge, and a member of the Judicial Council Jana Bajánková and a Supreme Court judge Zuzana Ďurišová, who is known to be one of Harabin's biggest critics.
