Extending election moratorium to 50 days defined as unconstitutional

The ban on publishing election opinion polls 50 days before elections is not in accordance with the Slovak Constitution, the Constitutional Court decided on Wednesday. The court suspended in December 2019 the effectiveness of this provision in the Election Campaign Act, stating that the earlier legal status applies, that is a 14-day moratorium on election opinion polls. The extension of the moratorium to 50 days was challenged at the Constitutional Court by President Zuzana Čaputová. According to the decision of the court, it is not in accordance with the Constitution or the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
