Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korčok at a special session of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Tuesday called for an immediate end to the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Hamas militant group and the protection of civilians on both sides.
Korčok pointed to the fact that Hamas militants have recently launched more than 3,000 rockets at Israel, and he condemned these attacks.
At the session, the EU ministers agreed on the need for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, calling for the protection of civilians and provision of humanitarian aid. Their joint statement has been supported by 26 EU-member countries, with Hungary being the only country to reject it.
Meanwhile, the Bratislava Old Town decided to fly the Israeli flag on the building of the city authority at Vajanske Nabrezie in a show of support for Israel. This act has, however, provoked conflicting reactions among city councillors. "We can't achieve reconciliation by ignoring one of the two warring sides," said councillor Adam Berka pointing out that if achieving reconciliation and peace is the goal, then it's customary in the world to fly both flags to show respect to both countries and nations.
