Everything that Slovaks consume as of Thursday until the end of the year will be on ecological debt, President Zuzana Caputova warned on a social network with respect to Slovakia's 2021 Earth Overshoot Day on Thursday. The Global Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity consumes more from nature than the planet Earth can renew within a year. "The ecological footprint we leave on the planet is constantly growing and the Overshoot Day, unfortunately, is moving to an increasingly earlier date each year," stated Caputova.
For comparison, the head of state pointed out that humanity lived on ecological debt from September 23 in 2000, but it reached the date on August 22 in 2020. "In order to put a stop to the growth in ecological debt, it's necessary to use the available natural resources more efficiently and work on cutting down consumption by, for instance, planting more trees or stopping the use of plastics," said Caputova, who also joined the #MovetheDate global campaign.
