Membership of the North Atlantic Alliance is the main pillar of defence and security for Slovakia, Prime Minister Eduard Heger (OLaNO) stated on Tuesday evening following his talk with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the Alliance's headquarters in Brussels. The Slovak premier confirmed the strong anchoring of Slovakia in the European and transatlantic organisations.
At a joint press conference with Heger, Stoltenberg said that Slovakia is a full member of NATO, as its troops participate in foreign missions in Afghanistan and Iraq and in the rotating mission in the Baltics. He praised Slovakia's contribution to stabilisation operations in the Western Balkans and also welcomed Slovakia's efforts to increase defence spending. "These contributions also make the Allies stronger and more secure," said the NATO head.
