National tax receipts lottery turns out not very successful

Even though Finance Minister Peter Kažimír tends to speak about the lottery of cash receipts as a successful project, estimates of his ministry of possible returns show something else, the SME daily informs today.

The lottery project which attracted various foreign governments and media planned to enlist average citizens to collect receipts from their purchases and register them with the government, creating a paper trail for transactions and forcing restaurant and shop owners to pay the sales taxes they owe. The government’s Stability Program shows that it may yield 7 to 8 million euro a year, which is only a tiny part of what the state loses on value-added tax. Estimates talk about two billion euro.
