Smer-SD collects 400,000 signatures for referendum on snap election

The opposition Smer-SD party has collected over 400,000 signatures on a petition calling for a referendum on a snap election, party spokesperson Ján Mažgut told TASR press agency on Monday. Party chair and former Prime Minister Robert Fico stated recently that a petition commission is planning to meet after Easter and decide on the next course of action. He wants to collect at least 500,000 signatures, as he expects President Zuzana Čaputová to challenge the legality of the referendum at the Constitutional Court. A total of 350,000 signatures are required to launch a referendum but Fico wants to have a safe margin.

The petition for the referendum was initiated by Smer-SD and the non-parliamentary party Voice-SD, and later joined by the non-parliamentary Slovak National Party (SNS) and supported by the Confederation of Labour Unions (KOZ).
