Number of non EU foreign workers in Slovakia on rise

The number of foreign workers from non EU countries in Slovakia is increasing, indicated an analysis of four organisations - InBáze, Centre for Peace Studies, Menedek and Mareena. It looks into the number of non EU citizens working in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. "Between 2004 and 2019, the number of foreigners living in Slovakia increased sevenfold, from about 20,000 to more than 140,000. Almost 60% of these foreigners are third-country nationals," the analysis said. This figure includes not only workers but also foreign students and those who came to Slovakia for family reunification.

The authors also noted that due to the lack of workers on the domestic labor market, many companies based in Slovakia are actively hiring foreign workers. Many are economic migrants who also emigrate from countries such as Ukraine and Vietnam. Some are located in large corporations, others own small businesses. "Despite the growing number of foreigners in Slovakia, there is a lack of studies and systematic data on their economic integration. Moreover, according to the Index of Migrant Integration Policies, Slovakia ranks consistently lower than its partner countries.
