The lights at Bratislava Castle, the Presidential Palace, the Parliament, the National Bank of Slovakia as well as several Slovak towns, villages and cultural monuments turned off for one hour on Saturday, thus joining the international Earth Hour project. Earth Hour is a world-wide movement organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The event is held annually, encouraging individuals, communities and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour on a specific day towards the end of March as a symbol of commitment to the planet. It was started in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Slovakia joined the initiative in 2011.
