Deportation of Jews from Slovakia 79 years ago

The pandemic has deepened hatred and hateful discussion, said interim Foreign Minister Jaroslav Nad on Thursday, marking 79 years since the first deportation of Jewish citizens from the war time Slovak Republic. As he added, it is important to focus on educating the young to be aware of the danger of disseminating hatred. Early morning on 26th March, 1942, the first train with Jewish citizens left the territory of the war time Slovak Republic. 999 girls from eastern Slovakia were transported from Poprad to the labour camp in Auschwitz. According to eyewitnesses, only 20 of them survived WWII. The second wave of deportations of Jews from Slovakia was conducted in September 1944. The war time Slovak Republic paid 500 Deutsch marks per capita to Germany for the transport. Over 70 thousand Slovak Jews died in concentration camps.
