President calls for resignation of PM Matovic

We need to see Prime Minister Igor Matovič (OLANO) step down and thus pave the way for a government overhaul, President Zuzana Čaputová stated on Tuesday. Čaputová noted that the government crisis has deepened in the past few weeks, as she's already received the resignations of four Cabinet ministers within less than two weeks - Health Minister Marek Krajčí (OLANO), Labour Minister Milan Krajniak (We Are Family), Economy Minister Richard Sulik (SaS) and Justice Minister Maria Kolíková (For the People).

The main governing party OLANO stated on Tuesday that it has taken into consideration the president's call. "Our goal is to resolve the coalition crisis as soon as possible, and to see the Government and its Manifesto remain in place," stated OLANO in a press release, adding that talks within the governing coalition are ongoing.

Matovič said on Sunday that he would step down as prime minister and take up a different post in the Government - but only if Sulík, Kolíková, Parliamentary Vice-chair Juraj Šeliga (For the People) and parliamentary health committee Chair Jana Bitto Cigániková (SaS) also resign. The Government has been in crisis since Matovič spearheaded the purchase of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine a few weeks ago.
