Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Korcok on Thursday condemned Venezuela's decision to expel the head of EU diplomacy in Venezuela Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa and called for the decision to be revoked, TASR learnt from his Twitter post. "This decision will only lead to another crisis and the international isolation of [Venezuela]," he wrote. The European Union has already condemned the expulsion and stated that Venezuela will only overcome the current political and economic crisis through dialogue and negotiations. However, according to the EU, the expulsion of the ambassador is undermining efforts for dialogue. Venezuela expelled Brilhante Pedrosa in response to new EU sanctions against 19 leading Venezuelan officials linked to Nicolas Maduro's regime. She was declared a persona non grata in Venezuela on Tuesday (February 23) and was given 72 hours to leave the country.
Maduro also declared EU Ambassador Brilhante Pedrosa to be an undesirable person last July. This followed a previous round of sanctions against Venezuelan officials. The government later abandoned this move.
