Prime Minister Robert Fico on Thursday stated that May Day is one of the most important holidays in Slovakia, so it's worth for him to visit as many events as possible throughout the country on this day. Fico was speaking at a May Day rally organised by the Confederation of Trade Union Associations (KOZ) in Žilina.
“The fight against unemployment is a big challenge for the Government for the next two years. I reiterate - although our opponents don't like to hear it - that we achieved tangible results. Nonetheless, we shouldn't forget about people older than 50, who have immense problems to find a good and appropriate job,” said Fico. “Another big priority is not to resort to taking away money from people with salaries of €500-600 and pensions of €250-300 per month - despite the continuing need for consolidation of the public finances,” said Fico. KOZ chairman Jozef Kollar told the crowd of several hundred people that the minimum wage was increased last year by 4.2 percent.
