Arctic weather turns off several regions

The Eastern Slovak power utility (VSD) recorded power outages at more than 3,400 households and businesses in the late morning of Thursday in the Presov and Kosice regions due to strong winds and wet snow that tore and blew branches and even entire trees onto power lines. The adverse situation has also been exacerbated by freezing temperatures, as the ice poses an additional burden to both trees and the power lines.

Some 37,000 customers of Zilina-based Stredoslovenska distribucna (SSD) power utility in central Slovakia have been cut off from electricity supplies following strong winds and heavy snow. The company informed that 26 high-voltage lines and more than 400 transformer stations were out of operation mainly because of fallen trees, which tore through wires and damaged poles. The number of outages is likely to grow due to the current unfavourable weather.
