MEP Lucia Duris Nicholsonova who is chair of the European Parliament's Committee for Employment and Social Affairs announced she is leaving the governing-coalition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party. "We're sorry to see a founding member choosing to go... she made her decision freely and we'll respect it," reads the stance of the party. The MEP's decision came in the wake of her press conference on European Funds and the supposedly irrevocably lost billion euros that sparked a dispute with Vice-premier Veronika Remisova (For the People).
"I've chosen to leave the SaS party. The scandal that I started caused problems for the party and exacerbated tension within the governing coalition. I failed to handle the form of the press conference properly, which thus came off as a broadside unleashed against Veronika Remisova, and I regret that. As a politician, I'm aware that form is often more important than content," posted Duris Nicholsonova. As for why she did not discuss the issue with Remisova face-to-face first, Duris Nicholsonova claimed that she learnt about the alleged squandered billion only late on, when nothing could have been done about it. As another reason she stated that relations prevailing in the coalition do not always enable effective cooperation and communication.
