Three senior representatives of the Belgian federal police are subject to disciplinary proceedings in the case of the death of Slovak citizen Jozef Chovanec. In February 2018, Chovanec died in police detention at Charleroi airport near Brussels. According to the Belga news agency, disciplinary proceedings were launched despite the words of Federal Commissioner General Marc De Mesmaeker, who admitted in the Belgian parliament at the end of January that this could happen much later, before there is a court ruling in the criminal case regarding their guilt. Last August, footage was released documenting the airport police's inappropriate intervention against the inmate in a pre-trial detention cell.
