Special Prosecutor bid closed Friday

At 4 p.m. on Friday, the submissions for the head of the Special Prosecutor's Office closed. As House Constitutional Committee chair Milan Vetrák (OĽaNO) informed on Friday, prosecutor Ján Šanta is one of the candidates. He also ran for the post of prosecutor-general in the December election. Aside from Šanta, the other candidates are the lawyer and ex-justice minister Daniel Lipšic and the prosecutors from the Special Prosecutor's Office Peter Kyseľ and Vasiľ Špirko. Parliament is scheduled to elect the Special Prosecutor at a session which will begin on January 26, with candidates having to undergo public hearings. The special prosecutor is elected to a 7-year tenure. The last special prosecutor Dušan Kováčik chose to resign, as he faces criminal prosecution over founding, orchestrating and supporting a criminal group and misuse of a public official's powers.
