Special Commission set up to investigate Lučanský case

The independent commission that is to look into the alleged suicide of former Police Chief Milan Lučanský while in custody charged with corruption, as well as his earlier eye injury, has 17 members, Justice Minister Mária Koliková (For the People) said on Monday. It includes both coalition and opposition MPs, a lawyer chosen by the Slovak President, one person nominated by the ombudswoman, media representatives, and experts from abroad - for example former Czech ombudswoman Anna Šabatová and Monika Platek from Poland. The commission will also communicate with Lučanský 's family. Members will vote on the conclusions, with those who don't concur given the chance to explain why. The members have signed a non-disclosure agreement, thus they will only inform the public about the conclusions of the investigation.

A member of the commission, opposition MP Denisa Saková, who was Interior Minister at the time Lučanský headed the police, said that the aim is to examine whether members of the Prison and Judicial Guard Corps (ZVJS) observed all relevant procedures. She also added that the commission probably won't have the opportunity to look into the investigation file. She said that the funeral of the ex-police chief will take place on Friday (January 8th). Lučanský 's case will also be discussed by the Parliamentary defence and security committee on Thursday (January 7th).
