Edu Min: Slovak universities should merge

In 2021, the Education Ministry will motivate Slovak universities to merge and Education Minister Branislav Gröhling hopes that at least one such merger will be announced this year. The ministry has already allocated money for this purpose. The aim of such a step is to create larger and better universities, which will subsequently have a better shot at receiving improved scores in international university rankings. In Groehling's view, the question is not whether university rectors agree with the proposed change, but whether it is good for students. "I have been discussing this matter with individual rectors since the summer," noted the minister, claiming that Comenius University and the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava as well as universities in Kosice have already discussed mergers.
