Former Police Chief Milan Lučanský died on Wednesday afternoon, the Justice Ministry confirmed the same day. In custody since early December over corruption-related charges, he attempted to commit suicide in his prison cell on Tuesday.
A criminal investigation in the case of Lučanský’s suicide was launched, general prosecutor Maroš Žilinka announced on Wednesday. There will also be an assessment of whether there has been a violation of regulations or rules by members of the Prison and Judicial Guard Corps during their service.
Lučanský resigned from his post this summer citing disagreements with the new Interior Minister Roman Mikulec and left the police.
