High school students to be able to take final exams one year sooner

Students will be able to take their final exams at high schools, called maturita in Slovakia, earlier than in their final year. Studies at most Slovak high schools last 4 years. Education Minister Branislav Gröhling said he sees no reason why a student could not take the exam in their third year if their school has covered the entire curriculum in particular subjects. Gröhling pointed to the fact that at general high schools called gymnasium, students cover the entire curriculum in two or three years.

The Ministry of Education thus wants to help students who for example plan to specialize in medicine, mathematics or want to go abroad.

The Minister emphasized that this early maturita will not be allowed to be taken from compulsory subjects. He drew attention to the fact that in this way students will be able to have a school-leaving examination in five or six subjects.
