The Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird paid an official visit to Slovakia. On Wednesday he voiced Canada’s concerns about Russian actions in Ukraine and the illegal occupation of Crimea and announced that if Russia doesn’t comply with the recent agreement from Geneva, other steps or sanctions will follow.
Talking to Baird, the Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák stated that sanctions are not a preferred solution for Slovakia, but a necessary reaction to the situation. He pointed out that the EU has already approved two sets of sanctions and is now discussing the third round - with extremely serious economic impact. However, he did stress that Slovakia is part of the EU through thick and thin and if the European Union decides for sanctions against Russia, it would support such a decision.
