President signs state budget

President Zuzana Caputova on Thursday signed the law on the 2021 state budget, which should post a deficit of €8.049 billion (7.41 percent of GDP). The deficit for 2020 is expected to reach 9.68 percent of GDP. It's forecast to go gradually down in the next few years - to 6.18 percent of GDP in 2022 and further to 5.72 percent of GDP in 2023. The President also signed a law on the right of residency for British nationals. Listen to our Topical issue.

The President on Thursday did not sign an amendment that governs the withdrawing of academic degrees, which means that Parliament overrode the presidential veto and the bill will come into effect in its original wording even without her signature. The bill will not allow academic degrees to be withdrawn retroactively.

President also signed into law the judicial reform as well as amendments to the Constitution.
The judicial reform concerns the make-up of the Constitutional Court, Judicial Council, sets up a new Supreme Administrative Court and introduces property checks for all judges. The reform also scraps decision-making immunity for judges of general courts, with judges subject to prosecution for bending the law if a crime has been committed.
