Maros Zilinka has become the new prosecutor-general after President Zuzana Caputova appointed him to the post on Thursday. Following his appointment he stated that he wants the Prosecutor-General's Office to be a transparent institution that will not protect the elect, but all decent people, and that he fill fight "like a lion" against unruly prosecutors. Zilinka said that he wants to introduce some organisational changes aimed at making the operations of the Prosecutor-General's Office more efficient. This should include the unification of penal policies, for example. His priority issues reportedly include the fight against corruption, dishonesty, misuse of power and serious economic crimes.
Facing accusations of lobbying via entrepreneur Michal Gucik (linked to the controversial businessmen Alexander Rezes and Ivan Kmotrik) with Sulik, Zilinka claimed that he himself had not had any contact with Sulik, so he asked Gucik to approach the minister, but allegedly only to present to him Zilinka's vision for managing the Prosecutor-General's Office as part of his bid. Sulik also said that he did not view the meeting as lobbying.
A former Deputy Interior Minister (2010-12), Zilinka has until now served as director of the Special Prosecutor's Office's section for investigating economic crimes. He has supervised some prominent cases, including the Drukos non-banking institution fraud, which resulted in the jailing of the company's owner Frantisek Mojzis, and the Technopol fraud case with the alleged involvement of Marian Kocner.
