Slovak MEPs have lent their support to demands raised by a petition called Climate Needs You, due to be discussed by Parliament, announced Lubos Konecny of the Progressive Slovakia party on Tuesday. The group of MEPs ask Parliament to pass a resolution aimed at committing the Government to carry out individual proposals included in the petition. The letter was signed by MEPs Michal Simecka (PS), Vladimir Bilcik, Michal Wiezik (Together both), Peter Pollak (OLaNO), Monika Benova (Smer-SD) and Ivan Stefanec (KDH).
The Climate Needs You initiative asks Parliament to declare a state of climate emergency, with an eye towards reaching carbon neutrality by 2040. In addition, the Government should draft a binding strategy to that end by the end of 2021 and support the most stringent climate targets of the EU.
