On Monday, Environmental organisation Greenpeace Slovakia launched a 65-hour protest in front of the Government Office in Bratislava to urge Prime Minister Igor Matovič to pursue a 65-percent reduction in emissions by 2030 at the EU summit in Brussels. This figure is "in line with the Paris Agreement and the scientific community finds it necessary if we want the warming not to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius and thus avoid climate and environmental collapse," claim activists. Scientists claim that if carbon emissions are not reduced at such a pace, the carbon neutrality target will not be achieved by 2050, or emissions will have to be cut later even more radically.
The protest will last from Monday to Wednesday (December 9) and will be attended by celebrities, influencers, artists and organisations. Matovič is due to discuss more ambitious climate policies with his partners at the EU summit in Brussels on December 10 and 11.
