The parliamentary agricultural and environmental committee decided on Tuesday that a petition of the Climate Needs You initiative that has been signed by more than 120,000 people will be submitted to Parliament for debate, committee head Jaroslav Karahuta announced on the same day.
The petition, entitled 'For the Climate, for the Future', was launched in late September. The authors of the document are asking MPs to announce a climate emergency in order that Slovakia may achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. At the same time, the petition demands that Parliament adopt a binding strategy in 2021 on how to achieve this neutrality.
"Our aim isn't to launch a revolution. The petition is based on scientific findings. We want to initiate a public debate on how to prepare for adapting to climate change," stated one of the initiators of the petition, Michal Sabo.
