Local food products promoted by Slovak Christmas project

The Slovak Agriculture and Food Chamber has launched a project called Slovak Christmas, aiming to promote the quality and accessibility of Slovak products at Christmas time, announced Chamber spokesperson Jana Holéciová. As part of the project, the Chamber wants to publish online good-to-know facts about Slovak food products, as well as their positive impact on the environment and people's health.

"In the first week of the project, we would like to provide information on the health benefits of fresh poultry meet and eggs along with the benefits of buying locally," said Poultry farmers' union director Daniel Molnár, who is also member of the Chamber.

Holéciová noted that Slovak poultry farmers supply 10 to 15% more eggs at Christmas time as compared to the rest of the year. "By buying their eggs, the consumer can be sure they are buying good quality, healthy products produced by local farmers," she added.

The Slovak Christmas project was launched also to underline the importance of supporting domestic food production in times of a global coronavirus pandemic. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the agro-food sector has been particularly sensitive to price fluctuations in European markets, with the subsequent accumulation of surpluses and pressure on prices and sales of Slovak food products. "Smooth food production with adequate state support and proportionate demand for local food is the basis for the good functioning of the domestic agriculture and food industry", Holéciová concluded.
